"Brother Jacob", her only other short fictional work, is by contrast a harshly comic, satirical tale. Like "The Lifted Veil", it is concerned with the powers of authorship, and the workings of mind, memory and history. These stories cast an intriguing light on Eliot's novels The Mill on the Floss and Silas Marner, and her later masterpieces, Middlemarch and Daniel Deronda.
